Forget the fads: 5 Tips for Eating Well

I don't know about you, but the commercials on TV this time of year drive me crazy. All kinds of marketing aimed at people who have good intentions of losing weight, eating right, and exercising in the new year.

While I think the resolutions are good, I'm not a fan of the marketing. All the "before and after" pictures, all the skinny minnie's dancing and flaunting their "newly" toned muscles is good advertising, but it's not reality. The truth is, losing weight is hard. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is hard. Eating healthy is hard. Not easy, not impossible, just hard.

In school, Jess and I learned about nutrition and exercise. We learned about healthy eating, healthy living, and staying active. As Health Promotion students we also learned about human behavior and motivation. It is unfortunate that, nowadays, human behavior and motivation are often used against us. Motivators like new year's resolutions are used to get us to buy products, sign up for memberships, and enroll in fad diet programs. The trouble is, they set most people up for failure.

I realize there are people who thrive at the gym, there are people who enjoy strict diets, and there are people who are able to maintain a healthy weight with less effort than others. These folks aren't the majority- don't believe me? Look around.

It's hard to make it to the gym, it's hard to eat healthy, and it's even harder to stick to a restricted diet.

When we buy in to things like "fad diets" we are buying a fresh start- something new and exciting. This is motivating, and that is why some people can start a diet and lose weight for a couple of weeks. The issue becomes when cravings hit, busy schedules interfere, and your life throws up obstacles to such drastic change.

This is why people fail at fad diets, they aren't real life. They are a change that is, usually, too difficult to maintain.

There is a better option though! When we strip away the gimics, the jargon, and the commercialism of a fad diet, the basic concept is simple: eat less. That's it.

This secret is what all diets are based on. Eat less.

The truth is we need carbs, we need protein, we need sugar. Our bodies need nutrients from each food group. By being mindful of the quantity and variety of foods we are eating, we can take the focus off of dieting and instead pay attention to eating well.

Here are some tips to help you eat healthy this year:

  1. Eat a variety of foods {we need a lot of nutrients, a lot of vitamins, and minerals. the best way to get these is through food, not supplements}
  2. Eat foods that you cook {learning to cook will likely help you lose more weight than any fad diet, I haven't researched it, but it makes you more mindful and more conscious of what you are eating... this helps you eat better and eat less}
  3. Sit down at a table to eat, every meal {families who eat together are healthier. there is research to support this. just google it. even if you drive thru, bring it home, sit down, and enjoy your meal}
  4. Take your time {don't rush. it takes 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain you are full, so give it a chance to regulate itself}
  5. Indulge when you need to {don't binge, but if you want chips- eat a few, if you want a cupcake- split it with your kid. don't deny yourself, it will lead to overeating later}
Our moto in college was "everything in moderation". I still remind myself of this simple truth. It keeps me on track!

What's your most practical tip for eating well? We'd love to hear it!

Weekly Work Out {Clean & Lean}

It's been a while since I posted about Clean & Lean. But for good reason. :-) I've already shared the basics, you can find them under the tab at the top-o-the-blog, and now that I have my handy dandy treadmill I have been working on some "routines", if you will.

To integrate cleaning my house into my workout schedule I have found that cleaning makes a great warm-up and cool-down. This also reduces the amount of time I'm on the treadmill, But I still get 50 to 60 minutes of workout 4-5 days a week.

Here's what a weeks worth of Clean & Lean looks like for me now (there are a few new moves that will be coming to the blog soon :-)):

Monday
Start a load of laundry
15-minute pick Up
25 minutes on the treadmill
Squats while I transfer clothes from washer to dryer
Standing crunches
Push-ups

Tuesday
{rest day}

Wednesday
Start a load of laundry
Vacuum Lunges
25 minutes on the treadmill
Mopping arms
Laundry Plies
Standing crunches
Push-ups

Thursday
{Some weeks this is a rest day}
Start a load of laundry
Window Abs or Dusting Standing Crunches
25 minutes on the treadmill
Squats while I transfer clothes from washer to dryer
Push-ups

Friday
Start a load of Laundry
Guest bathroom (toilet cleaning squats, bath tub arms, mirror abs)
20 minutes on the treadmill
Master bathroom

Saturday
Dishwasher calves/Dishes
25 minutes on the treadmill
Standing crunches
Push-ups
Clean the kitchen- counters, sink, floors, wipe down cabinet fronts

Sunday
{rest day}

Here are a few mommy machine secrets to make this as efficient as it can be:

  • I usually get my hour of workout in while my kids watch an hour of TV. After we get home from school/the babysitter's house it is good for them to have some quiet time and a snack. It also happen that they love Max & Ruby and that show is on from 3-4. Good timing for me.
  • I don't beat myself up if I don't get everything done. There are some days that things come up and I have to rearrange my schedule. That's ok!
  • I will substitute activities as necessary. This routine isn't the end all, be all of my schedule. Somedays I have way more dishes/kitchen clean up to do so I will swap that in for dusting or laundry. If it's really nice outside we will go for a walk or play soccer in the backyard and that's my "treadmill time" for the day. Flexibility makes it much easier to get things done and stay active!
  • I do more housework than this, but these "routines" help me to maximize my cardio work and muscle toning in a one hour time frame. All the other "chores" I do still count, but they just happen before or after my hour workout.
  • I remind myself that every thing I do around the house can be active- even if I have to piece my 60 minutes together over a few hours, at the end of the day I will have a cleaner house and a healthier body!

What's your favorite household chore to step up and make a work out? I'd love to know!!

Happy cleaning everyone!

Why I Bought a Treadmill

So, we bought a treadmill.

I realize this seems silly for me to be blogging about this purchase, this isn't a sponsored post.

Part of living healthy is making sure you are active. I am certainly active with my kids, but I know that I need to go above and beyond day-to-day activity to keep in shape and continue to push myself to stay healthy.

We have been talking this purchase over for a while now. I have gotten into my "clean & lean" routine and I have told you all how it has helped me. But I have reached a plateau point- that point in any lifestyle change where your body gets used to a certain activity level and calorie intake and settles into a certain weight. In order to move on to the next plateau (and drop more weight), you have to make additional change.

My change, beginning this summer, has been to walk/run in addition to my "clean & lean" schedule. The problem was that I live in Oklahoma where the summers are super hot and humid (excuse). It is also difficult to find a good time to get in a 30 minute walk/run (excuse). I wasn't able to keep up a consistent schedule and it was frustrating. So we started looking at treadmills.

Talk about an agonizing decision. There was a "pro/con" list for this for sure. Here's what swayed us:
  • We can get our cardio while the kids are napping or playing.
  • We don't have to worry about the weather being an excuse.
  • We both needed something to constantly motivate us- nothing says motivation like a couple hundred bucks sitting in your bedroom.
We have had the treadmill for about a month now and I have already noticed a difference in my energy level! Using it consistently- 30 minutes 3-4 times a week- has helped tremendously. I don't weigh myself, but I can say that my pants are fitting loser and my goal is to be down at least one size by my birthday (in Feb).

I am excited about being able to change up my workouts and continue to improve my fitness routine. I doubt this will be the last blog about my treadmill. :-) This is one step in a healthier direction for me!

What is something you've done this summer to be healthier? I'd love to hear it!

My Journey to be Healthier: 10 to 8

This week, I reached a milestone in my journey towards living a healthier life.

I have been on this journey for a long time. I realize being healthy is a journey you take on for your whole lifetime. Much like Journey I "don't stop believin'". Even in difficult times (like when I gained too much weight during my pregnancies) I just kept telling myself that I needed to find a way to make "healthy" work for me. "It goes on and on and on and on..." {I digress}

This journey is why I began to "clean & lean". It all started with vacuum lunges. I called Jess and said "omg. I can't believe I just did lunges while I was vacuuming. And I can't believe it was 20 minutes of cardio!" She said "omg. Don't stop believin'". Ok, maybe those weren't her exact words...

That was two months ago.

Since then, I have been much more conscious of every move I make. I try to figure out how I can exert extra energy (read: burn extra calories) in every thing that I do and how I can focus on working out the different muscle groups ("tummy tight makes your abs alright").

It's almost like a game show: "Let's play: How will I ex-er-ciiiiiiiise today?!".

All of these wacky ideas, like window crunches, dishwasher arms, and a few more that I will continue to share, are just me trying to work in a little extra work out. This is my motivation. I realize it isn't everyone's motivation. I wish I was motivated to run, but I'm not. I wish I was motivated to go to the gym, but I'm not. My journey and my motivation has been paying off.

This week I fit into a pair of jeans that I haven't worn in over 2 years (since I was 3 months pregnant with Little Miss). I have gone from a size 10 to a size 8.

Sweet success!

That's a big deal to me, size 10 is the biggest size I have ever worn- that's how I knew I had work to do. I don't know how much weight I have lost because I don't own a scale. I don't weigh myself. I don't think about "numbers".

I think about "healthy". To me, healthy means fitting into my "pre-second child" jeans. Healthier will mean continuing to take this journey where it leads me and always believin' in my motivation to make every movement count. I will never be a size 2, and I'm ok with that.

Jess and I understand that balancing a healthy lifestyle is hard, but so worth it! We are so excited to be able to share our insights and secrets about how we stay on our journey to be as healthy as we can possibly be.

Plus, we "don't stop believin'" we can do it- and we won't let you doubt yourself either!
